BRAD'S COMMENTS:
Much fan debate has raged over the exact size of the Nor Class stations.
I've done my best to render the Nor relative to the other big stations familiar
to most Trek fans; especially the mammoth
Spacedock.
I also believe that the Nor is a sort of middleground between the truly big,
immobile space structures (like Spacedock) and the semi-mobile, limited facility
stations like the Alamo Defense Outpost.
As we see throughout ST:DS9 the Nor performs the functions of both
classes, in that it is a protector of the planet Bajor (Defense Outpost!) as
well as a docking and repair/re-supply station for starships (Spacedock!) while
at the same time being able to maneuver within a limited envelope (Defense
Outpost!) while also acting as a waypoint between its home planet and shuttle
ferrying people to and from orbit (Spacedock!) To add to the confusion,
Deep Space Nine (a.k.a: Tarok Nor) is largely modified by Federation and Bajoran
engineers following the Cardasian retreat from bajor and the annexing of the
station by combined Starfleet and Bajoran military personnel. The Deep
Space Nine station and your average Nor model are liable to have very different
characteristics, so I have rendered two columns below, one for DS9 as we know
it, and the other for the standard Nor as I am able to estimate.
Aesthetically, the Nor is a pretty different space
station compared to the other stations we saw prior to its debut in 1992.
Both Starfleet spacedocks (mushroom-shaped and cage-type) and the
R-1
series of stations are quite unlike the Nor in appearance. I credit
the designers for their effort to come up with something that looked quite non-Terran
in origin, owing to its Cardassian construction. The interior sets are
also very different from the Starfleet sets we become familiar with in TNG,
creating a very different atmosphere for the entire show.
From a game standpoint, I was unsure of how to handle
the Nor. It was my impression that Chief O'Brien up-gunned Deep Space Nine
considerably in comparison to its Cardassian days, though the Cardassian model
possessed weaponry too. Deep Space Nine appears to be at its most potent
around the time of the Klingon/Federation fissure, when we see Deep Space Nine
mobbed by a considerable fleet of Klingon warships, absorbing and delivering a
terrible amount of punishment. I've tried to balance the station between
the awesomeness of the Space Dock and the relative mortal Defense Outpost, and I
hope all of you fans will remember that I'm largely flying by the seat of my
pants here, with little official data to point the way. If anyone can send
me solid stats, be my guest. I'd love to get my hands on such
material. Until then, I hope you have fun with this, as there are lots of
scenarios that can be spun around a Nor station--especially Deep Space Nine
itself!
