BRAD'S COMMENTS:
I have always taken this class to be the TOS-era precursor to the
Wanderer--even
if the official text says that this class is actually younger than its
more powerful cousin. Like the Wanderer class, the Lightning blockade runner is
surprisingly durable, and more than a match for most other TOS-era ships of
similar mass. I have had fun staging "moonshiner" scenarios
wherein two Lightning class ships with illegal contraband onboard are pitted
against older D-7 cruisers or Federation escorts acting as police ships, with
the goal for the Orion player being to get from one side of the map sheet to the
other and escape intact. The Klingons and Federation have to stop the
Orions of course, just as prohibition lawmen had to try and intercept
bootleggers. Like Ness versus Capone, the forces of Law and Order do not
always have an easy time when faced with a powerful and agile enemy.
P.S: Thanks to Bernard
Guignard for his scans of the ship and information from a previous edition
of the game!

Lightning Class V Blockade Runner
Notes: For a class IV vessel, the Lightning seems exceptionally well armed
with its six disruptors, half of them mounted for forward fire. This is no
ordinary merchant vessel--though, with its crew of 23, it is also a paltry
excuse for a pirate vessel.
The Lightning is a courier, a light,
fast ship intended to carry small valuable cargoes, blasting out of its path any
opposition it cannot outrun. Though it bears a superficial resemblance to
many similar vessels of the Orions, the Lightning is more recent than the
Wanderer, having been designed during the tumult of the Four Years War.
Designed to pour its heart out in speed, this ship has shields so paltry and a
hull so strong that it makes no difference whether shields are up or not.
Many Orion captains put their trust in speed and live to tell how both dorsals
were holed and still they got away.
Equipped with fail-safe navigation
systems, permitting accurate guidance even if the main sensors are shot away,
and crewed by diehards who get paid only if they live to deliver the goods,
Lightnings are exceptionally good at getting where they are supposed to go.
