BRAD'S COMMENTS:  A Jaynz file that finally does a little justice to the old Remora design.  A zillion thank-yous to Steve Morisani Jr., who was kind enough to send me several of his old issues of STARDATE magazine, as well as some old FASA modules that I had not previously possessed.  The Charger is a much more playable version of the Remora, mainly because of the added torpedo bays.  Cosmetically, the Charger and Remora are almost identical.  In fact, the FASA and Jaynz versions were identical.  This is convenient if only because the hexagonal playing pieces for the Remora can stand in for the Charger during game play.  For the sake of artistic differentiation, I somewhat altered the re-draw I originally did for the Remora, placing the Charger's f/p and f/s torpedo apertures in the most logical place I could think of ((the forward tips of the delta-shaped secondary hulls) and making detailed additions to the warp nacelle and "underbelly" sections.

Charger Class VII Destroyer
NOTES:
The commissioning of the USS Charger signaled the beginning of a new era in Star Fleet capabilities foreseen in a White Paper report published just after the development of the FWG-1 by Leeding, titled "The Warp 10 Navy: The Future Is Now!", written by Commodore Joseph R. Holman, in which he discusses UFP's commitments to multiple fronts in view of recent technological advancements made
in weaponry and warp drive by both the Klingons and Romulans.

While Commodore Holman was making an inspection tour of the Sol VI shipyard facilities, he was invited by officials of ECF Ltd., designers of the Remora Class escort, to discuss a proposal to convert the Remora into a destroyer, which involved the addition of one forward and one aft FP- 7 photon torpedoes to the 8 FH-4s.  Star Fleet rejected the proposal because Procurement felt that the ship was either too under- powered or too overgunned for a destroyer mission.
After listening to ECF's concerns, Holman then presented the White Paper concerning the Warp 10 Navy proposal. Holman suggested that the proposed destroyer, fitted with newer warp engines, impulse drive units, and weapons systems, would stand a much better chance of being accepted by Star Fleet Procurement. After six weeks of upgrading the performance parameters, Star Fleet approved construction of the new destroyer, and on 2/2007.04, the USS Charger was commissioned into the fleet.
The Charger Class destroyer is the first ship in the UFP inventory to use the FWJ-1 warp engine, a powerful, light-weight single-engine design optimized for Class V to IX ships. It is the first destroyer to have a standard capability of Warp 10, and an emergency capability of Warp 12, ensuring quick arrival at potential trouble spots. On her maiden voyage, the USS Charger set the UFP record for Sustained Emergency Speed Duration for Warp Drive Ships, maintaining Warp 12 for 12 hours, 6 minutes, 15.2 seconds. The record still stands to date.
Considered by many to be one of the most versatile destroyer classes ever to be produced, the Charger Class is unique in that it is virtually identical to the Remora Class Escort on an exterior visual scan. Retaining the high maneuverability of an escort, the ship is more than a match for Klingon and Romulan counterparts. Its weapons arrangement, consisting of two banks ofFH-9 phasers (each of which can fire into three arcs) and swivel-mounted FP-6 photon torpedoes provides a potential knockout punch not seen before on any destroyer. The strong superstructure is a result of the compartmented dual-wall internal structure first seen on the Baker Class. These factors combine to make the Charger Class one of the most powerful destroyers in known space.
The Charger Class destroyer receives its name from a horned antelope native to Alpha Centauri. Other ships in the class are named after existing or legendary creatures and predators.

The Charger Class destroyer is produced at the Sol VI and Salazaar shipyards at a combined rate of 12 per year; by 2/2401, a third facility at Morena will begin operation and the rate will increase to 24 per year. Star Fleet has contracted for the construction of 300 Chargers.

Of the 36 built as of 2/2306,30 remain in active service, 4 are used by Star Fleet Training Command as training vessels, one is under the direction of Star Fleet Intelligence Command, and 1 has been listed as missing.
