BRAD'S COMMENTS: The Remora class is noteworthy in that it is the class featured on the cover of the Federation Ship Recognition Manual. A single-nacelle design based around the de rigueur Constitution Refit saucer, the Remora is doubly handicapped by its lack of power and its lack of photon torpedoes. Adding one or the other--or preferably both!--would substantially improve the Remora and make it a fine escort or even a destroyer. Instead, because it only has one warp engine, the Remora never has enough power to move and raise shields without leaving the phaser banks dry. Building an underpowered ship and then equipping it exclusively with power-hungry energy weapons is a sure recipe for disaster. So in spite of its looks--of which I am fond--the Remora is kind of a stinker, and unless I am playing one of my custom-build classes, which always feature torpedoes, I don't like this ship very much. NOTE: I took the liberty of re-drawing the schematics while working on the OLD&A site rebuild, and discovered that the warp engine was not scaled correctly to the saucer, and that the three views (as originally shown) were almost impossible to match with one another, when examined in detail. After solving some of the linear discrepancies and the warp engine scale issue, the dorsal and port views are almost unchanged, while the bow view has a significantly different profile. I hope FASA purists won't mind my touch-up. Also, the Remora was revisited in an old issue of STARDATE magazine, in the form of the better-equipped Charger class.

Remora Class VI - VII Escort
NOTES: Of the 861 Remoras built, 175 Mk 115 and 205 Mk Ills remain in active
service, with 280 Mk Ils and 12 Mk Ills in reserve fleets. Eight Mk Ils are used by Star Fleet Training Command; 102 Mk Ils and 20 Mk Ills have been destroyed; 3 Mk Ils have been captured by the Klingons.
Twelve Mk Ils are listed as missing, and 2 are likely to have been captured by the Romulans; 28 Mk Ils and 2 Mk Ills have been scrapped; and 12 Mk
lIs and 2 Mk Ills have been sold to private commercial concerns. Production of the Mk II has been halted, but the Mk Ills are being produced at Sol VI at a rate of 32 per year.
