BRAD'S COMMENTS: Not to be confused with the Klingon L-9 "Saber", the Federation's Saber is a smallish post-Galaxy design which played a part in the ensemble CGI cast of ST:DS9 and ST:FIRST CONTACT. Some sources indicate that the Saber is a frigate, others indicate she is a light cruiser. Some list her torpedo load as a mere two launchers, others say three. Phaser numbers are similarly muddled. I opted for three torpedo launchers, if only because it seems clear that virtually all the Starfleet ships of the TNG-era and afterward have at least one torpedo weapon firing into the aft sector. All Starfleet ships built post-Galaxy also use the now-ubiquitous collimated phaser "strip" design, so I fudged it for the FASA system, which does not adapt to the phaser "strip" very well. Mainly I wanted to make the Saber potent, within limits. She ought to have some of the latest weapons and be sturdy (witness her being part of battles with both Borg and Dominion ships) but her size puts reasonable caps on her total armament and superstructure. If she had troops onboard I'd have classified her a frigate, but alas I chose not to give her troops, so instead she is a light cruiser, as so many sources seem to indicate. For game play purposes she might function as an escort for larger and/or lesser-armed vessels. There is almost no data available on her scientific and/or exploratory roles. From an aesthetic perspective, the Saber continues the post-Galaxy trend towards non-conformity with the classic Constitution look; the Saber "saucer" is hardly a saucer at all, while the engineering hull is entirely merged with the primary, and the nacelles are mounted without pylons in an unconventional fashion which merges the bussard collectors into the primary hull itself, much like the collectors on the Steamrunner.
